The upcoming pelagics are trips that are setup to help birders get off shore, add the seabirds they need to their lists and help with identification of the regular cast of characters plus the "holy grail" birds, such as White-faced Storm Petrels, and rare Pterodroma Petrels. We are excited to encourage you to sign-up often get out to sea. Remember to start taking your non-drowsy motion sickness medicine (bonine or meclizine) at least 2-3 days prior to boarding the boat if you know you will likely be seasick or if aren't sure if you get seasick. The motion sickness drugs that make you sleepy, can actually contribute to seasickness if you are over tired that can trigger motion sickness.

This is a great time of year to search for species like Band-rumped and White-faced Storm-Petrels, Black-capped Petrel, Bridled Tern, South Polar Skua, several shearwaters (including the potentially soon to be split Scopolli’s Shearwater), plus some great marine mammals like Striped, Atlantic Spotted, and Risso’s Dolphins, Pilot Whales, Beaked Whales, Fin Whales, and  there’s always the chance of rarities. Next Up, September 13-14 & October 4-5,

Venture out 80-100 miles into the offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean!

This trip is led by our team of experienced marine mammal naturalists and researchers, as well as a pelagic bird naturalist. While offshore, we chum for pelagic birds to get that perfect photo opportunity! The boat departs in the evening to ensure deep water searching at first light. eBird checklists are created by our team of experts and shared after the trip.

Possible sightings include:

  • Marine Mammals: Humpback Whales, Fin Whales, Minke Whales, Right Whales, Sperm Whales, Pilot Whales, Beaked Whales, Bottlenose Dolphins, Common Dolphins, Risso’s Dolphins, Spotted Dolphins, Atlantic White-sided Dolphins, and more!

  • Pelagic Birds: Shearwaters, Jaegers, Northern Gannets, Fulmar, Phalaropes, Kittiwakes, Loons, various Petrels and many more!

  • Other Species: Sharks (Hammerhead, Thresher, Great White, Basking, Whale), Sea turtles (Loggerhead, Leatherback, or Green), Oceanic Sunfish, False Albacore, Tuna, Jellyfish, Flying Fish, Sargassum and more!

Please note, trips are subject to varying weather and sea conditions. Trips will only sail in favorable weather conditions. Captain will make the final decision if the trip is sailing 48hrs prior to the scheduled cruise.

Sleeping accommodations: Since this is a longer trip, sleeping arrangements onboard consist of padded indoor benches, outdoor benches, and plenty of floor space. It is encouraged to bring a sleeping bag. Boarding the vessel occurs in order of reservation.

When/Where

  • Be at the dock at 9pm on Saturday, August 10th for check-in & orientation. Please be on-time. We expect to return to the dock about 6 pm the following day.

Join us as we explore the deep offshore waters up to and possibly beyond the edge of the Continental Shelf and the Hudson Canyon waters.  This ultra deep trip coincides with pelagic migration. 

Likely bird sightings for this time of year include Black-capped Petrel, Cory’s, Great and Audubon’s Shearwaters, Band-rumped, Leach’s, White-faced, and Wilson’s Storm-Petrels, Long-tailed Jaeger, Bridled Tern, and Red-necked Phalarope. Other rarities we have found in our region during the summer months include, Trindade (formerly Herald) and Fea’s Petrel, Masked Booby, and South Polar Skua.

We may also find interesting marine mammals like Cuvier’s Beaked Whale, several species of Mesoplodon Beaked Whales, Striped Atlantic Spotted, Offshore Bottlenose, and Risso’s Dolphin, and Short-finned Pilot Whales. As we come back in through the shallower zone we could also find Fin, Humpback, or Minke Whales.

There has been recent reports of Right Whales, Sei Whales, and a Blue Whale offshore.

This trip is approximately 24-hours. Capacity is limited.  Reservations are required. There is a 7-day cancellation policy.

Boarding begins at 7:00 PM on Sunday evening, August 18th. Passengers will board in the order in which their booking was received.

Inclement weather date TBA.

After checking in, passengers will board one at a time and be able to choose a location on the boat for their belongings and an area to sleep, etc. (example one side of each table).

After your reservation is booked, we will send a trip disclaimer that will need to be signed and sent back as acknowledgement and agreement.
